Out of his mouth shall flow rivers of living water. The words Jesus speaks are life to body, mind and spirit. They are hydrating and cleansing. They have the power to transform us from dust into life, if we believe them.
While walking through Samaria, Jesus ran into a Samaritan woman drawing water at Jacob’s well. He asked her for a drink and they had a conversation.
‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’
‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.’
John 4:13-15
He only took a few minutes to speak with this woman, but his words were life to her. She rushed to tell the people in her town about him. When they heard him speak, they wanted him to stay too. He spent two days there and because of the living waters flowing out of his mouth, many lives were transformed.
It was only a little while later that Jesus shared the same message in the Jewish Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles.
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’
John 7:37-8
This offer wasn’t just for a drink that never runs dry. Jesus told these people that they too, would be able to flow with rivers of living water. They would be able to share this gift with others.
He was telling them how the Holy Spirit works and moves. It flows like water tumbling from heart to heart, growing from drop to majestic flow, becoming like a great river flooding the land.
On hearing his words, some of the people said, ‘Surely this man is the Prophet.’
Others said, ‘He is the Messiah.’
John 7:40-41
Here we are, thousands of years later, still wondering about this man of God. Who is He? Is he a Prophet? Is he the Messiah? Is he my Saviour? Is he the creator of the World? Is he bigger than Science? Is He more real than the Big Bang?
What if….?
What if He is?
Jesus spoke with such authority at that festival that the crowds were in awe of him. People asked where he learned this knowledge? Jesus stood up and called out loudly. He told the people that he was sent from God and that his teaching came from God.
As He called out to the crowds of people, rivers of the true and living understanding of God flowed out of his mouth and all over the people. Even the temple guards were impacted by Jesus’ words.
‘No one ever spoke the way this man does,’ they said.
The Pharisees were not impressed, but Jesus brought living water to the people that day.
